Overview
Use this guide to diagnose and fix the most common espresso machine issues. Start with the basics (power, water, beans, cleanliness), then follow the problem that best matches what you’re seeing.
Applies to: Home and prosumer espresso machines (semi-automatic, automatic, and super-automatic)
Time to try most fixes: 2–15 minutes
What you’ll often need: Fresh water, microfiber cloth, backflush detergent (if supported), descaling solution (manufacturer-approved)
Before you begin (quick checks)
- Power & startup
- Confirm the machine is plugged in and the outlet works.
- Turn the machine fully off/on (power cycle).
- Water
- Tank is seated correctly and filled above the minimum line.
- If plumbed-in: confirm the supply valve is open.
- Warm-up
- Most machines need 10–30 minutes to reach stable brew temperature.
- Cleanliness
- A dirty group head, shower screen, or grinder causes many “mystery” issues.
Problem: Machine won’t turn on
Symptoms
- No lights, no display, no pump sound.
Likely causes
- No power, blown fuse, tripped GFCI, failed power switch.
Solutions
- Try a different outlet (or reset the GFCI outlet).
- Check the power cord for damage and ensure it’s firmly seated.
- If the machine has a removable fuse (some models do), replace with the exact rated fuse per the manual.
- If it still won’t power on: contact service (internal components may have failed).
Problem: Pump runs but no water comes out (or very little)
Symptoms
- Loud pump sound, minimal flow from group head/hot water wand.
Likely causes
- Empty tank, tank not seated, airlock, clogged intake filter, scale blockage.
Solutions
- Reseat and refill the water tank.
- Prime the system:
- Open the hot water function/wand and run water for 30–60 seconds.
- Then try brewing again.
- Clean the water tank intake filter (if present).
- If flow is still restricted: run a descale cycle using manufacturer-approved descaler.
- If descaling doesn’t restore flow: scale may be severe—service recommended.
Problem: Espresso pours too fast / tastes weak or sour
Symptoms
- Shot time is very short (e.g., under ~20 seconds for a typical double).
- Thin body, sourness, under-extracted taste.
Likely causes
- Grind too coarse, under-dosing, poor tamp, channeling, low brew temp.
Solutions
- Grind finer (make small adjustments and test).
- Increase dose slightly (for a double basket, many setups land around ~16–20g, depending on basket).
- Tamp evenly and firmly; ensure the puck is level.
- Use fresh beans (ideally within ~2–4 weeks of roast).
- Let the machine fully warm up; preheat portafilter and cup.
Problem: Espresso pours too slowly / drips / tastes bitter
Symptoms
- Very slow flow, choking, shot runs long (e.g., over ~35–40 seconds).
- Bitter, harsh, over-extracted taste.
Likely causes
- Grind too fine, overdosing, too much tamp pressure (or puck too dense), blocked basket.
Solutions
- Grind coarser slightly and retry.
- Reduce dose a bit and avoid overfilling the basket.
- Clean the portafilter basket holes (soak and scrub).
- If your machine supports it, clean/backflush the group (see “Needs cleaning” section).
Problem: No crema (or crema suddenly disappeared)
Symptoms
- Flat-looking shot with little to no crema.
Likely causes
- Old beans, pre-ground coffee, low brew temperature, low pressure, dirty equipment.
Solutions
- Switch to fresh beans and grind immediately before brewing.
- Confirm machine is fully warmed up.
- Clean group head and shower screen; oils reduce crema.
- If using a pressurized basket, verify it’s not clogged.
- If pressure seems low across all functions: consider descaling and/or service.
Problem: Coffee sprays everywhere (portafilter “sneezes” / channeling)
Symptoms
- Spraying from the spouts or bottomless portafilter; uneven streams.
Likely causes
- Uneven distribution, clumps, cracked puck, grind too fine/coarse for the dose.
Solutions
- Improve puck prep:
- Break up clumps and distribute evenly (WDT tool optional).
- Tamp level.
- Adjust grind slightly (often finer with better distribution, or slightly coarser if choking).
- Ensure the basket is not overfilled (shower screen imprint is a clue).
Problem: Water leaks around the portafilter during brewing
Symptoms
- Water escapes at the group head edges; weak or messy extraction.
Likely causes
- Worn group gasket, dirty gasket seat, incorrect portafilter insertion, overfilled basket.
Solutions
- Remove the portafilter and clean the rim and group gasket area.
- Lock the portafilter in firmly (without forcing).
- Reduce dose if the puck is contacting the shower screen.
- If leaking persists: replace the group head gasket (common wear item).
Problem: Steam wand has weak steam or no steam
Symptoms
- Can’t texture milk; steam sputters; low pressure.
Likely causes
- Not fully heated, clogged steam tip, scale buildup, insufficient boiler temp.
Solutions
- Wait for steam-ready indicator (steam boilers can take several minutes).
- Purge the wand: open steam for 2–3 seconds to clear condensation.
- Clean the steam tip holes (use the included pin tool if available).
- Descale if steam performance has gradually declined.
Problem: Milk is too bubbly / not silky microfoam
Symptoms
- Large bubbles, “soap foam,” no glossy texture.
Likely causes
- Incorrect wand position, not enough stretching then rolling, milk too warm.
Solutions
- Use cold milk and a cold pitcher.
- Position the tip just below the surface at first (“paper tearing” sound) for a few seconds.
- Then submerge slightly to create a vortex (rolling).
- Stop at ~55–65°C (130–150°F) for best texture.
Problem: Grinder is clogged / grinder not grinding (or grinding inconsistently)
Symptoms
- Motor runs but little comes out; clumping; huge dose variation.
Likely causes
- Oily beans, humidity, compacted grounds, dull burrs, obstruction.
Solutions
- Empty the hopper and run the grinder briefly to clear.
- Clean the chute and burr area (follow grinder manual).
- Avoid very oily/dark beans if your grinder clogs easily.
- If burrs are old or performance has declined: consider burr replacement.
Problem: “Clean me” / “Descale” light won’t turn off
Symptoms
- Cleaning alert persists after cleaning/descaling.
Likely causes
- Cleaning cycle not completed, missed reset step, sensor still detecting condition.
Solutions
- Re-run the full cleaning/descale program from start to finish.
- Confirm you followed the reset step (often in the menu settings).
- If the machine uses a water filter, ensure it’s installed correctly and reset filter timer if applicable.
- If still stuck: share the model and the exact message for next steps.
Maintenance tips (prevents most issues)
- Daily: wipe steam wand, purge after steaming, rinse portafilter/basket
- Weekly: clean shower screen area, soak baskets in espresso cleaner
- As needed: backflush (machines with 3-way solenoid), descale based on water hardness
- Always: use good water (too hard = scale; too soft = flat taste/corrosion risk)
When to contact support/service
Contact service if you notice:
- Burning smell, smoke, or repeated tripping of breakers/GFCI
- Persistent low pressure after descaling/cleaning
- Internal leaks (water under the machine)
- Error codes you can’t clear
Info to collect before you escalate
- Machine make/model and approximate age
- Grinder model and current grind setting
- Beans (roast date if known)
- Shot recipe: dose (g), yield (g), time (s)
- Any error message/code and a short video of the issue (if possible)
